Geek & Sundry’s newest show airs today! Spellslingers is hosted by StarCraft Pro Commentator and game enthusiast Sean ‘Day‘ Plott hosts a show where he sits down and plays some Magic: The Gathering with his friends.
The first episode does a great job explaining the game to anyone who may not be familiar with it, and I imagine it would be easy to follow along with without any prior MtG knowledge.
Decks are chosen randomly by way of The Wheel of Fate, leaving the outcome of the games down to skill and the luck of the draw. As the first episode has taught us, games can sometimes come down to a topdeck miracle!
Sean is, and always has been, extremely charismatic and it’s obvious from watching that he is genuinely enjoying himself, which is always a good thing. The personalities are joined with some nice video effects, some of which are purposefully over-the-top (and those are usually the best!).
If I had anything negative to say about Spellslingers, it would be that there wasn’t enough of it! I understand the there are limitations to how much it’s possible to shoot and edit within a period of time, but it would really be nice to see a best of three be played out (as is normally done in Magic). Having said that, the first episode is roughly 22 minutes in length, so it’s by no means a short show, I just want more!
Being that this is only the first episode, it’s hard to say whether or not the explanations of the rules of the game will be a recurring thing or not. Regardless, this is definitely a show to keep an eye on! It’s nice, after watching so many Magic Pro Tours and Grand Prix where the stakes are always so high, to watch a much more laid-back game of Magic, and just have fun.
Spellslingers is airing on the Geek & Sundry YouTube Channel and new episodes are set to come out every Wednesday, so be sure to check it out!
